T.S. Eliot Biography
Here are two excerpts from T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland" and "The Hollow Men."
Using what you have learned about Modernism--the departure from traditional poetic practices, use of experimental styles, emphasis on the purity and punch of language, and examination of a world vastly in state of rapid and messy change--write a short essay telling me what idea or observation you think Eliot is trying to convey in his poetry. You may look at the longer poems, but I only want you to focus on these particular excerpts in your essays. Bonus points if you can analyze how it connects with The Walking Dead.
"The Wasteland"
APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land,
mixing Memory and desire,
stirring Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering 5
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
[note: "The Hollow Men" was a later addition to "The Wasteland"
"The Hollow Men"
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but with a whimper.
