Let's just go ahead and talk about this right here and now. Is this show about gender, class, or love? The interesting thing about this drama is that it engages, pretty uniquely, on several issues. One of the potentially confusing or entertaining elements of this show is that it changes gear pretty quickly around episode 5/6. Take a look at these pictures: What are we even looking at here? These are two desperately different images of the same show. How would you explain or express the differences in these photos? Are they arguing different issues or the same issue? If more than one issue, which are they focusing on? How does one influence the other? Have at it! Now, take a look at these: Anytime you have a story, from anywhere, the characterization of those people is determined, ultimately, by what happens to them. Our perceptions of them are often at war. In this show, you should have already discovered some pretty complicated love triangles and competitors in love. How do these pictures reflect the message being sent to modern South Korea about what makes an acceptable or desirable mate? Who wins? Who loses? What does that even look like?
Watch the three film clips above. Explain to me what you think the film is arguing about belief, faith, trust, and/or love. Think about the connection between Salim, Jamal, and Latika. Comment here!
Directions: Though we've finished working with The Village, we never got much of a chance to discuss it. Let's talk about some things! The cool thing about directors is that they are always full of intentions. Nothing you see in a film is by accident. Watch these film clips below and ask yourself these questions: 1) Why did Shyamalan choose to appear in his film in this particular role in this particular way? 2) What relationship does the audience have to the film through the actors? Why is that important? 3) Given what you know about the film thus far, what would you say is the connection between protection, love, and fear? WRITE YOUR ANSWERS IN THE COMMENTS BELOW.
