Create a notice similar to the one in the Writing at Work section of Chapter
7. The notice should incorporate a topic sentence, major details, minor details,
transition words/phrases/sentences, and a concluding sentence. The notice should
be 1 to 3 paragraphs of 10-12 sentences each. Set up your notice in MLA format,
including but not limited to the following: heading, header, font, spacing,
title, indentation. Review the MLA Document Setup folder's resources for help.
Since this is a notice, you may use bullets, and bulleted information may be
sentence fragments (no other sentence fragments are acceptable).
Grading and Rubric:
Writing Assignment 4 will be graded based on several criteria using the
rubric below.
Topic Sentence
(20 points) Topic sentence is written in correct sentence format
and clearly states the main/controlling idea of the paragraph. Topic sentence
addresses topic in a direct and highly focused way using appropriate language
and relates to supporting details of the
paragraph.
(15) Topic sentence clearly states main idea of the paragraph
with an appropriately stated controlling idea but may contain unclear language
or language may lack specificity.
(10) Topic sentence clearly states main idea but does not
encompass the supporting details of the
paragraph.
(5) Topic sentence severely lacks clarity, directness, and/or
specificity.
(0) No topic sentence or the topic sentence is not a
sentence.
Support &
Development
(20 points) Paragraph contains major details, specific details,
examples, and evidence. Minor details accurately and adequately support major
details. All details, examples, and evidence clearly relate to the topic
sentence.
(15) Paragraph is missing 1-2 major details, or 1-2 major details
do not clearly support the topic sentence. Paragraph lacks adequate minor
details to support major details.
(10) Paragraph does not include ample major and minor details to
support the topic sentence, or the details may be
inadequate.
(5) Paragraph contains too few major and minor details to
adequately support the topic.
(0) No major and minor details are included or those included do
not support the topic sentence.
Coherence & Unity
(20 points) Paragraph follows logical methods of organization and
includes transitions, key words, and correct pronoun reference. Ideas are
clearly connected and arranged in an order that makes
sense.

appropriate transitions.
(10) Acceptable arrangement; transitions may be weak. Is
generally organized and focused. Demonstrates some coherence and progression of
ideas

main idea. Writer adds an effective CLINCHER statement at the
end.
(15) Conclusion simply restates the main idea of the paragraph
and summarizes the evidence. Concluding sentence effectively maintains purpose
and focus on the main idea.
